// Kai Gläser °A day on bike° I decided to put together my impressions in many large pictures of different size preferably created out of photos and illustrations of certain colours (red and orange, pink, black and white). the speed and permanent movement of the bike courier were for me the important aspects. the photos are connected with graphic elements matching urban scenery (they are placed in the middle of the pictures just as the courier gets his directions at full speed through his radio). >
for me these elements all together produce the graphical examination of the day of a bike courier. the pictures have different formats as every ride is a new one. >
Differently framed and hung freely they symbolize the stations of the courier. post-it notes are distributed between the pictures as the elements of his daily routine. a filmlike sequences made from single image leads through the area like a courier´s run. take a ride.
// Timothy Briggs °Eniola – A day in the life° I chose my sister Eniola for this project who is a 6 year old girl from South Africa now living in the UK. She has the rare chromosome disorder Cru Du Chats which is French for “cry of the cat”. My aim for this project was not only to show what she experienced throughout the day but also to convey her personality through the use of simple signs and colour in the format of a poster.
// Willi moran °Continuous Narrative of Suzie Makol° Observed on 12.9.09 She gets up early, 6 a.m. She knows it’s going to be a long, day, no breaks, but fulfilling nonetheless. In preparation for the task at hand, she gathers a few things to entertain herself for the walk to her destination: a novel, a notebook, a few pens, and her camera, of course. Into the weathered backpack they go along with a few children’s books. No breakfast, she can eat later; it’s too early to digest. [...] The smell of raw meat and fish lingers in the frozen air as thick, snowy winds twist against her neck. Her shoulders buckle beneath the annoyance of the cold as she waits for her employers to buzz her in to the relieving warmth of their most private space. She removes her belongings in a ritual fashion while seeing off her sleepy-eyed employers into the cold. Extracting a book from her bag, she finds a comfortable place on one of the couches near the table lamp and begins to read. [...] The soft, distant sounds of bare feet on wooden floors tells her that her small subject is ready to begin his day. She collects him in her arms and carries him to the kitchen to prepare breakfast and begin the day. She steps out onto the staircase, now covered in snow, and squints her eyes,adjusting them to the brilliant white reflections from a mixture of snow and ice. Another work project arises around 2 p.m. Forfeiting all thoughts of hunger, she enters the transformed warehouse and quickly strides to the elevator. The heat of the room is immediate and choking.Computers and various amounts of equipment line the walls in a deadened state. Their screens blank, however emitting low hums and warm clouds of air smelling of plastic. She chooses a spot to her liking, as the room is empty, and begins her work. [...]
// Ibrahim Turk °no title° My aim for this brief was to truly represent what an average middle class British university student goes through in this country. I think comparing this to other students around the world, and what they go through on a daily basis would make interesting visual comparisons. I also wanted to show the aspect of my parent’s ethnic roots, and my cultural roots from northern Cyprus, and how they merge with the British culture. I have been brought up with both at an academic level and in my private life. The objective was to show this in the form of a short video clip, with the photos being from my personal perspective so you wouldn’t actually see me. [...] It took several journeys to uni and back for me to get all the photos and sound recordings much to the annoyance of the Stanstead airport security. [...] I wanted to produce my film in flash because when we wear given this brief at the beginning of the academic year, I did not know how to use it, and really wanted to. It is a programme that has tested me, I would say that if I wanted to make my life easier I would have chosen to do a printed item using Illustrator or Photoshop, however, I believe the excitement and creativity comes when you push yourself.
//Julie Tostevin °Hugo The Cat° Cat’s owners love him very much but do they truly know what the world looks like through his eyes? This video shows exactly what Hugo the Cat gets up to of an evening. This is contradicted with the sound in the background of a conversation between his owners and what they think he gets up to….is Hugo really the cat they think he is!?
// Andreas Tolxdorf °A Life Called Music° For the making of my film I decided to go for a stop motion animation using photographs of the original settings in the intention to catch their special atmosphere. Therefore I abandoned the option of using colour variations, filters or other effects to let the pictures speak for themselves. Effects are reached only through the stop motion technology, increasing intensity in the first half of the film. After that so-called „Intro of the Beats“ begins the series of pictures showing subjects from different epochs of my characters life. After that the actual film starts. The pictures are connected to the music and scenes are set to the lyrics of Neil Young. So the main impression resembles a music video, and exactly this was my goal. For the music I decided to use Old one by Neil Young because that is a favorite song of Willi and describes him very well and it is even his nickname. The song has been remixed by DJ Polar to a contemporary drum-n-bass version.

// Rachel Olsen °Nick Harvey° I attempt to relate the thinking process of Nick Harvey in these posters by representing a sequence of his average day’s events. Nick Harvey is a student, teacher, photographer, and video artist living in Chicago. Nick Harvey’s process of thinking and brainstorming is shown in his personal notes on his walls. Nick writes on his art studio wall with marker, crayon, and pen to show a creative timeline of his process. I wanted to continue the flow of Nick’s handwriting on the wall by giving the feeling of motion through the illustrations of Nick and his creative language. In the posters his carefree and indulgent lifestyle is depicted through the free-style images and Nick’s infatuation with drugs and alcohol. The colors used in my posters are colors from the notes on the wall. The bold words used in each poster symbolize inner demons that Nick deals with in his everyday living and his logical process between brilliant and burnout. Plastic, morality, and heady express Nick’s insecurities with himself as well as his vulnerability to self medicate with narcotics and liquor. To represent Nick’s day I made three 23in x 29in posters that fill the wall, so it resembles his imaginative studio walls. With three posters one can sense the energy moving through the day and see Nick’s eagerness and ambition tumble away into a spirit of creativity and loneliness. These three posters mirror a poem of Nick’s creative approach to life, art, and film making and all the hysteria that Nick brings to his every breath.
// Ana Bernardo. Ana Rocha. Ana Jesus. Juliana Duque °24 Empty Hours° The indivual we focuse on in this project reflects one of the most recurrent diseases of the modern age. The variety of constraints of urban life such as solitude and stress contribute constantly to many psychological disorders. In what way this person´s behaviour differs from those in Hong Kong, India or United States? Is there really a difference? Or do this boundaries become blurred? >
This is a non-lineal narrative, in which the user chooses a way to watch 24 hours in this character´s life. At first the observer can choose one of the seven time sets available, and then opt for the perspective in which this story is told.
// Ekram Othman °No title° This is a map of Lana’s life. It takes up the span of a day and some times things overlap in her day. Lana is a history major, and is very into geography. So a map with a timeline seems appropriate for her. She walks with a march, but it is in a fun way. She doesn’t realize she does it sometimes, She loves frozen grapes, and friends. This is her 24 hour map. She furndraises, hangs out with friends, is social and though her classes tend to keep her busy she is very conscious of making time to perform her religious duties.
//andrea espadinha. joana couto. rita dias °Taxi Life° We wish to document the daily experiences and journeys of a taxi driver. By viewig this individual’s particular behavior, we’ll be able to get a better understanding of the Portuguese society as a whole. >
The repetitive and monotonic cycles of the driver’s tasks have given us a new perception of his daily life.

// Lea Battermann °Handcraft – the hands are the instruments° In Germany the traditional handcraft has a very high value. Germany´s handcraft skills are also well known in Europe. Organisation, accuracy and discipline, which are among the virtues of the Germans, are appreciated especially in these fields of work. Traditional basic principles could not be replaced completely by new technologies until today. The hands of a workman are for him day after day of large importance – they are next to usual tools THE instrument that he requires for his work. „Handcraft“ accompanies a working day of Marcus. Marcus learned a skilled trade and works as a mechanic and heating installer. His everyday working life consists mainly of physical work and his hands are his indispensable tools. During his work oil >
and other substances and dirt particles leave traces on hands and clothing.  Photographic on-the-spot shots of Marcus work flow have been created for „Handcraft“.  These were transferred through the technology of monotype to the old, dirty fabric remainders. The outlines of the portrayed hands have been sewed with yarn. The sewing emphasizes the portrayed craft and shows also a craft aproach within the design. Again these material remainders have been photographed at the places where Marcus works. The selected scenes give the spectator an insight into the world of the craft.
// Laura Drechsler °A day with ANNIKA° Annika is a trained florist and works in the garden centre in Gödringen near Sarstedt. Annika´s duty is to create flower arrangements such as bouquets, table and festival arrangements binding wreaths and flowers for funerals. This work is high skilled and very artistic. >
I created a sequence of posters that consist of 14 subjects with poems of well known poets and authors such as Goethe, Fallersleben and Shakespeare that have the plant life as their subject. To allow the viewer an insight into the work flow and the activity areas of Annika in the garden centre I also created two small flip-books.
// Jennifer Allenby °Mr Cooke° As soon as I chose my character for the brief, I knew that the project had to be something more 3D and interactive than a piece of work formed at a computer screen. I have known Mr Cooke over a year and each time he visits the restaurant he has a new story or subject to talk about. For a guy aged 74, I am constantly interested by him so I wanted my outcome to reflect this. The jacket, something Mr. Cooke would wear and immediately reminded me of him, provided a blank canvas in which to display his memories, hobbies and parts of Mr Cooke’s everyday life and style. It is inspired by the work of Tracey Emin and Nudie suits from the 70’s, but with my own twist.

// karol drzewiecki °SUPERMAN° In my work I impersonated the Superman. I intented to show uncommonness of my day and my daily duties. The last frame is created with the aim to demask the situation. The Superman`s uniform hanged on the wardrobe shows the irony of uncommonness of my day. Our everyday duties may seem to be extraordinary for all of us. But if we looked at the lifes of particular persons it would turn out that every one of us can be somehow a Superman.
// Luke Pura °Jimmy Clark ° In these posters I have attempted to visually translate Jimmy Clark’s day, focusing on the duality between his life as a mixed martial arts fighter, and as a humble, job holding, average guy. Jimmy Clark is a male in his mid 20’s who works as a manager at a restaraunt during the day, and trains to be a mixed martial artists in the latter part of his days. His day to day life is a constant battle between being the fighter, and the everday average male. Since I came to find that Jimmy’s day was centralized around this constant duality, that is visualized in my poster. I have placed the two images of Jimmy back to back, in order to show the battel between the two parts of his day. I also chose to use only black and white in my poster to further emphasise this duality. I have came to call the two parts the “sheep” and the “wolf”. I have a set of three posters that are broken down: on the left side, the “sheep”, on the right side, the “wolf”, and in the middle they have their meeting point. I have chosen to use realistic hand warps, or bandages as the bonding agent to combine the two halves together. Although his life is all about the duality, there is the bonding agent that combines both parts together smoothly. Throughout the posters I have chose to add dirt to the poster, to further emphasise struggle throughout the day, and his life as a fighter. The type is spread throughout the three posters, in accordance to its “wolfness”, or “sheepness”. As a whole, the three posters try to visually recreate the essence of Jimmy’s day, the day of a mixed martial arts fighter, or a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
// Fatma Muradova. Margret Stilke ° 24 h Christian´s World° Christian Belt is a student of the environmental technologies in Hanover. Travelling is his passion – he mainly hitch-hikes and spends the nights in the stranger´s houses (couch surfing). For example he has travelled in an old school bus with hippies through North America or he hitch-hikes from Hanover to Istanbul, from Hanover to Morocco… Our idea was to draw a 24 hours map of Christians‘ entire daily routine whereby the drawing follows the form of the map of the world. >
In the map the places are marked that Christian went to in the years 2000 – 2009. In addition to the map, we also created a notebook with images from the most exciting places.

// michael meißner °No title° My work documents a day in the life of Matthias Meißner. He is 51, married and has worked for 24 years as a protestant minister in Kassel. The graphics show the close connection of his work with the Bible. The Bible is for him the manifesto of his work, but also when he is not working it’s a pervasive thread through his everyday life. To show this the images painted in oil interweave with the text and look as if they were painted into the Bible. The medium of the oil painting is selected in order to emphasize this connection, as most representations of biblical scenes exist in classic oil painting.

// Sinan Isik °No title° We meet other people every day at different places and locations. Be it in the streetcar, at the railway station or shopping in the supermarket. Everyone is busy with his life and activities so that we do not really see the others. We might communicate for example to pay the rolls at the baker‘s or to ask someone for the way, but the essential remains concealed from our eyes. At the same time every one of us carries small or large stories with them and could perhaps tell them. We do not talk about these stories nevertheless we know that they are present. We have become so accustomed to this way of living that we consider it to be the usual. We can hear these stories only when we accompany a person for a certain time. I have tried to implement this thought into my work. It was very important for me not only to show the person, whom I accompanied 24 hours, but rather the inner person.
// Gemma Hoodless °A Day In The Life of a Creative° To document how one person in the world lives their life, I asked my mother to keep a hourly diary of how she spent her day. Using any medium that she found appropriate I asked her to document what she has done and how she felt. Following a good talk about how she felt doing the project, and inspired by her illustrations, I wrote a poem to accompany her day.
// ana quina. ana caria. rute pinto. filipa pinto °Wandering in Lisbon° In our project, we wanted to create our main character based on a stereotype that worked as a catalyst for a subjective approach to the city of Lisbon. This stereotype, described by Baudelaire as a ‘Flanêur’, which represented the 19th century Industrial Revolution’s anguish, reflects today a particular way of life, in which paths and ways are traced in almost random means, in a very unique way. The ‘flanêur’ watches the world that surrounds him, leading his mind and his life to every place he sees. He describes the cities, the streets. He frees himself of the particular and the private, in a way that he starts to see the streets as home, a refuge and a shelter. This feeling mirrors the need to feel safe, the need for his identification with the city. The streets are his home, his world. There, nothing is strange or harmful. He feels comfortable and protected. Along with the meaning of ‘flaneur’ comes the idea of ‘psycogeographic maps’. The project is based in an interactive sequence, where the user can chose which paths he wants to go, which places he will visit. Some places attract us, others repel us, and in a certain way that can be mapped. This emotional effect can extend itself from a row of buildings, to a bathroom. It’s important to point out that the feeling brought to you by a place is inseparable from its meaning. It’s through these maps that we define a random path and with the stereotype (the ‘ flaneur’) , the user is lead on a trip through the Lisbon we (fellow Portuguese) know.
// Nicole Schieck °Die Liebhaberbühne° Hans Jürgen Gündling has been an actor for forty-five years. He acts on German, Swiss and Austrian stages. His place of residence is Lüneburg. There he runs the theatre „Liebhaberbühne (Theater der Zwanzig)“ in its own cellar. I created a theatre programme in which the course of his day is presented. It includes the illustrations connected with text elements. Parts of the rooms and pictures of entire scenery of the flat are appearing. Images of the props in the rooms are also shown. Through the collage technique the odd world of the actor emerges. Perhaps his actual stage?
// LOUISA BRUNOTTE °BUFFI – a day in the life of JULIAN° Julian is four years old and loves to occupy himself with dinosaurs. I created a card game with 60 picture cards and text cards, that shows his daily life and invites the viewer to his own discovery trip. A triceratops is used as a screen for the experiences of the day. Julian has chosen the name „Buffi“ for him. >
Through a projection, the pictures become an unusual visual experience. Breaches, distortion and irritations emerge and oppose the habits of the usual seeing. The detail moves into the centre view, that is portrayed sharply on the dinosaur body, all unimportant elements become blurred into the background or disappear in the dark. The cards are designed as a game so that each card is equipped with eight notches. The colourful backs show the time of the portrayed activity on the front. Again many small dinosaurs can be discovered. Ten text cards should interrupt the flood of the images. They document amusing monologues and dialogues that I recorded in the course of the day. Four slipcases emphasize the dinosaur´s silhouette. Together with a constructions paper for your own „Buffi“ they supplement the game. Every spectator can experiment with the game‘s elements to his own liking – and become acquainted with Julian.
// Alexa Viscius °No title° Marisa´s day seems like a day she may have seen before. I visualized her day with the help of 6 different points of her day. The first point is about Marisa at work she is a sales woman at a high end clothing store, and a good one, I watched her sell a woman $1,100 dollars worth of clothing in less than 30minutes. The second is about her trying on a dress for her coworkers, this shows her confidence. The third is her doing some good and thinking about someone else, by buying him a Christmas gift. The fourth is where things start changing...she losses her pack of cigarettes, then in the fifth point she spills beer on herself, and at the end of the night the final point she goes home with someone she does not want to go home with. Some seem mundane but help give a glimpse not just on her day, but her personality. It was a chaotic and fast. Decisions were made and with some of them came regret. The vertical dividing lines help to emphasis this chaos along with the jagged shapes. The image inside the shapes appears fast. The smaller rotated illustration is there to represent a day that was similar to this; where she has made the same kind of mistakes. The fact that it is repeated makes it seem like she has not learned anything from her mistakes. The color scheme is supposed to depict somewhat of bad weather, a gathering storm. There is open space to show the openness of the suburbs, where she lives. She commutes to the city for school and to go out on the weekends, but in the suburbs there are vast landscapes of parking lots with interruptions of neighborhoods, her she feels more safe and tends to forget her mistakes, which may allow her to keep making them. The word ÒsleptÓ is one of the biggest words on the image to make it seem more permanent, it is the only phrase that is in the past tense to give it more weight, it won´t be able to be undone.
// diana salavisa. filipa araújo. sofia fischer. teresa simões °Weighting Time° The intention of the project The Weight of Time is to explore the particularities and possibilities of the narration experience, having audiovisual tradition as a starting point such as assembly, narrative, temporality and the media – particularly photography and cinema. Our aim is to create a multi-linear and interactive narrative, exploring the audiovisual and multimedial principles. The Weight of Time is a portrait of the day of a watch maker from Lisbon. If a regular person feels the impact of time and the distress cause, then to the watchmaker, living surrounded by watches – by time – this impact is much heavier and conscious. This way, the key-concepts are the inevitability of time, ageing and solitude and the daily routines.

Joana Miranda °Rooms of Memory° Rooms of Memory aims to document past stories of a 95 year old woman who lived a full and long life witnessing a period of great transformations, from the times of former Portuguese colonies in Africa to the present in Portugal. >
Her daily routine is entwined with memories which are present in several objects, enclosed in the rooms of the house. The Past steps into the Present and both inhabit in harmony the involving physical and mental spaces.

// Julia Wachauer °24 hours in the life of Jan° Jan works in the intensive care in the INI Hanover. I decided to work with straight vectors and a rather cool colour scheme to mirror the sterile and clean world of the hospital where no mistakes or uncertainties are allowed. The unusual format – 20cm x 300cm – is adapted from the form of an ECG paper. The work is divided in two halves – in the first we see everyday life activities of Jan and in the second the scenes from his private life. Jan works at the International Neuroscience Institute with patients who are in the neurosurgery – and this job requires permanent inspection and supervision to avoid mistakes and to do all humanly possible in every situation. Jan takes care of the patients, the equipment and the medications and has hardly a quiet phase until he finishes work. In the middle of my work is the representation of the transition phase between sleep and being awake – the well organised millimetre paper breaks into a dreamlike crazy pattern. As soon as Jan wakes up, the remaining lines dissolve and the representation of his private life begins. Here Jan meets his girl-friend, practices violin and relaxes in front of the television until it´s time to go work again, which is announced through the reappearing of the millimetre paper.
// ruben cardoso. raquel pinto. filipa campos. ana pedro °Head in the Clouds° An unknown character kindly invites the user to freely explore his day. By dragging windows and playing different short videos, the user is allowed to see moments of a common day in Lisbon through the character’s eyes. Only after viewing all the clips will this character’s identity be revealed.
